  An important project to promote energy efficiency, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and develop sustainable buildings in the city is the Los Angeles benchmarking program. In order to comply with the Existing Buildings Energy and Water Efficiency (EBEWE) regulation, the Los Angeles Benchmarking Programme was created. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) is required by this act to receive annual reports from privately owned structures larger than 20,000 square feet and city-owned buildings larger than 7,500 square feet.
